GED® Preparation
We provide instruction in the following content areas:
- Reasoning through language arts
- Mathematical reasoning
- Science
- Social studies
Classes also include:
- Test-taking strategies
- Practicing evaluation-based writing
- Official GED® practice testing
- Classes are designed to assist adults with basic computer literacy skills needed to pass the GED®.
- Classes are for adults 18 and over who are no longer enrolled in public education.
- Career counseling services are also provided to students.
Before beginning classes, students must:
- Register on designated registration dates and provide a government-issued photo ID
- Take a placement test (TABE) to determine the appropriate class level
- Attend orientation

English Literacy/Civics and English Language Learners (ELL)
- ELL classes feature English literacy/civics education with an emphasis on speaking, reading, writing, and understanding American culture.
- English literacy/civics education provides instruction that will help adults learn about civic participation, the history of the United States, and how to prepare for citizenship through naturalization.
- A 70+ hour commitment is required.
- Classes meet twice weekly.
- Students must bring to class paper or notebook, and pens or pencils.
- We provide career counseling services to students.

- Attend orientation
COST - $75 (includes textbooks). Tuition must be paid prior to beginning class.
Registration, Evaluation, and Orientation
Students must complete an English registration form or a Spanish registration form and attend an evaluation to determine class level before entering classes. Students must present a government-issued photo ID at the time of registration. Adult Basic Education students and GED® students must take the TABE assessment. ELL students must take the CASAS. - English Day at First Baptist Church Ashland
Tuesday/Thursday from 10:00–12:00 p.m. (Fall semester- 9/3 to 11/21)
- English Night at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 Henry Street, Ashland, VA 23005- Monday/Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Enrollment Information
When a student has completed the registration form and we have received the tuition payment, the student is immediately enrolled and should be in attendance the first class session. We accept enrollment on a “first-come, first-served” basis until the maximum number of persons is accommodated. We will not notify registrants unless the requested course has been filled or canceled. Courses are open to adults 18 years of age or older who are no longer enrolled in a secondary school program.
Refunds
Refunds are automatic when courses are filled or canceled; otherwise, there are no refunds.
Class Cancellations/School Closings
We may extend class sessions due to weather cancellations or other unforeseen circumstances. Classes will not meet when schools are closed for holidays or other emergencies. If schools close early, announcements will be made on TV99 for Comcast customers and through local TV/radio stations.
